Sailing Instructions (Excludes Districts and Invitational Events)

Rules- The regatta will be governed by the rules as defined in The Racing Rules of Sailing. These Sailing Instructions apply to all Buoy Races (excludes District and Point to point races). 
  • Entries- Competitors may enter by delivering a completed entry form and paying the $10 entry fee to the GRSA Race Committee before 1100 on the day of the regatta. Fees for Junior Racers shall be waived. Social Events following the race may or may not have a separate fee. Refer to the GRSA NOR for details.
  • Notices to Competitors- Notices to competitors will be announced at the skippers meeting. 
  • Signals Made Ashore- Signals made ashore will be displayed from the flagpole located next to the GRSA Pavilion. If a postponement is signaled ashore, the warning signal will be made not less than one hour after the AP Flag is lowered.
  • Schedule and Class Flags- A Competitors’ meeting will be at 11 AM at the GRSA Pavilion. The warning signal for the first race will be at 12 noon. Any Fleet with three or more boats will be given their own start sequence. R/C will attempt 3-4 races per day. 
  • Racing Area- The racing area will be beyond the point on the Swift Creek Reservoir, or as determined by the Race Committee.
  • Courses and Marks- Windward/Leward and/or Triangular courses will be sailed. All mark rounding’s will be to port unless otherwise noted on the R/C Boat. Courses and number of laps will be posted on the R/C Boat. 
  • Starting and Finishing Lines- The Start Line will be between the Starting Mark with red flag and the red flag on the R/C Boat. The weather mark may have an offset mark. The Start/Finish Line will be considered an obstacle of the course while racing when there is a separate weather and leeward mark. The Five-Minute Starting Sequence will be used.

  • Time Limit- The “target time” for the first boat to round the weather mark is 15 minutes and for the first boat to complete the race in 45 minutes. The R/C reserves the right to abandon all races. 
  • Protests/Penalty System- Protests shall be delivered to the R/C at the GRSA Pavilion within 30 minutes after the race committee docks. Hearings will be held as soon as practicable after racing each day. RRS Appendix V will be in effect. 
  • Scoring- Low point scoring system will be used. Hampton ratings will be used for the Handicap Class. In multi-day Series, one throw-out race will be given for every six races scored. In Series Racing, R/C will receive scoring credits equal to one-half of the number of starters.
