GRSA Shoreline Preservation Project Underway

The club’s shoreline preservation and improvement project is now well underway.  GRSA’s Facility Chairman Jim Hudson has worked for a substantial part of 2011 to plan and request approvals for this important project.

A new nine-inch bulkhead has been installed adjacent to the small boat ramp and work has begun to remove portions of our existing docks.  All necessary approvals for new docks have been received with the exception of those necessary for constructing new finger docks.  This portion of the project is still being pursued by Jim and the club’s Board of Directors.

To check out the progress on the project, visit our photo gallery.

A Message From the Commodore
Commodore announces slate of officers for 2012

Dear GRSA members --

It's hard to believe that the year has come and is nearing an end. What a year it has been! We've had a record number of racers in our events, collaborated with many premiere sailing clubs for education and racing, upgraded our club fleet, and initiated a shoreline improvement project that will protect our assets while providing dockage for members. It's been a pleasure to work, sail, laugh, and well... Drink, with you all this year.

As we prepare for 2012 the board approved the following slate for vote at our annual business meeting and holiday party on December 3rd.

Commodore - Jeff Bobbio
Vice Commodore - Mills Jones
Rear Commodore - John Reilly
Treasurer - Tom Gallagher
Secretary - Mike Kasko
Members-at-Large:
Mark Mabry
Joe Racette
Florence Hunt
Judy Graffum

Please enjoy the remaining activities of the year including the Pumpkin regatta (details below), Fall workday on November 12th, and our annual meeting and party.

Thanks to everyone for making GRSA a truly special place!

Linda~

So Long to a Dear Friend
GRSA will deeply miss one of the club's truly great members.  Bob Atherton, a founding member of GRSA passed away on Monday, July 11th.  Bob was an avid sailor who served as the club's Commodore in 1978 and in 2003.  Bob's contributions to GRSA are far too numerous to mention.  He was an engineer at heart and applied his passion to help transform our modest site into a first class sailing club.  During his second stint as Commodore, Bob coordinated the construction of our primary building housing the club's kitchen and bath facilities.  In 2010, Bob managed the design and construction of GRSA's new entrance project.

With his genuine interest in club members, keen sense of humor and ability to get things done, Bob was a true leader that we simply cannot replace.  Please join us in expressing our condolences to Bob's wife Lyn; his two sons, Robert Jr. and wife, Regina, Randy and wife, Daphne; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren and many friends.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. Thursday, July 14, at Brandermill Church, 4500 Millridge Pkwy., Midlothian, Va. 23112, with a celebration of life to be held at 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Brandermill Church Charity Fund.

Junior Sail Camp a BIG Success!
The 2011 Junior Sail Camp has concluded and the kids are ready to challenge their parents on the water.  GRSA provided instruction to 37 students in 4 fleets.  The week concluded with the 22 boats on the water for the Junior Regatta.  The new Optis and 420s received rave reviews from the students and instructors.  We look forward to further expansion of the program during the next several years.  Check out the new photo gallery for pictures from this year's Sail Camp!

New Boats for GRSA Sail Programs!
On a hot and muggy May afternoon, a big red tractor trailer arrived at GRSA carrying six lightly used International 420s and three brand new Optimist sailboats.  This marks the beginning of a new chapter in the long history of Sail Programs.  Instruction in these new boats will better enable GRSA youth sailors to compete with clubs around both Virginia and the country.

GRSA Flying Scot Fleet Conducts Clinic
In an effort to get off on a solid start for the 2011 racing season, GRSA's Flying Scot Fleet conducted a one-day clinic focusing on the basics of boat set-up and sail controls. A big thank you to Jerry Latell of Ullman Sails Virginia and Latell Sailmakers and David Neff, Flying Scot Capitol District Governor and owner / operator of the Selby Bay Sailing Center for conducting the clinic attended by 24 Scot sailors. Thanks also to Fleet Captain Pete Cookson for pulling this together!
