Basic Adult Sailing 2005

17 adult members, waiting list applicants, and member guests participated in Basic Adult Sailing the weekend of May 20-22, 2005.  The weekend started with an evening session on safety and terminology on Friday.

Saturday brought a chilly but sunny morning and after the onshore drills we moved that afternoon to everyone’s favorite; capsize drills.  Finally Saturday afternoon the class had a chance to practice all they had learned on the water (yes, even the capsize recovery) and all were ready for Sunday to come.

Sunday morning brought sunny skies and plenty of wind and the class had a chance to practice all points of sail before the Regatta!!  Congratulations to all our participants and new sailors:

Rebecca and Lindsay Pagano, Sandy and Joe Campbell, Sean Tucker, Dee Shannonhouse and Sherri McCracken, Greg and Michelle Beavers, Maggie Barrett, Tim and Cathy Wildt, Monica Relvas, Joan and Wally Granville, Sarah Shahab and Praveer Srivastava.

Several of the students participated in a post class regatta.  Racing takes a special courage for all sailors but these participants were willing to give it a go and all are commended for their effort and good sportsmanship:  Michelle Beavers, Praveer Srivastava, Sean Tucker (2nd), Maggie Barrett (1st), Greg Beavers (3rd), Lindsay Pagano, Monica Relvas, Dee Shannonhouse, and Joe Campbell.

Thanks to our GRSA staff of Bob Damon, Tony Flores, and Roland Brown for their time.

If there is interest, another course will be considered in later July.  Contact Bob Damon if you have an interest in another class.
